Lyrics:
Are we still having a good time?
I know we’ve been playing a lot of new music tonight, but can I play y’all something that’s brand new?
I wrote this song last week with my buddy Blake Neesmith. Blake was out here talking earlier tonight with Food for the Hungry, and can I just ask you guys a question? Has anybody here ever struggled with doubt and had questions—and maybe depression?
Maybe just this thought of, “God, where you at right now?” Like, “I can’t feel You in my life.” Like, “I know You’re there, but I’m having a hard time finding You.”
Anybody ever felt that way? It’s alright to say yeah. I think it’s human.
I mean, this past year of my life has been a really tough year. Earlier, when I was talking—ten years, a little over a thousand shows—the highs are really high, and the lows are really low.
I’ve never struggled with depression in my life, but before this tour started, I was ready to hang it up. I was ready to just quit. I was tired of walking on stage every night, putting on a front, because I didn’t feel like God was with me anymore.
And sometimes, the only thing I know how to do in those situations is to write a song.
I hadn’t written a song for myself in a really long time. A few years back, I wrote a song called “Fear Is a Liar” that really helped me through a tough time in my life.
And last week, we were getting ready to fly out one morning, and Blake and I decided to share a hotel room. As we were driving to the airport, I said, “Hey, man, I’ve gotta write a song. I’ve gotta write a song to get some stuff off my chest.”
I said, “I just feel like I can’t find God anymore in this.” You know? I said, “I feel like I’m just going through the motions. It’s on autopilot, and I don’t want to feel that way.”
So we wrote this song, and immediately, when I woke up the next day, it was like—it was like gone. It’s like God just came in and said, “Here I am. I’m still with you.”
And it got me to thinking—it's a pretty human thing to have that thought. You know, I’ve never in my life doubted that God didn’t exist, but there have definitely been times in these last ten years where I’ve questioned, like, “Where’s He at?” Like, “Have I abandoned Him, or has He abandoned me?”
And when I think about Jesus’s life on this earth—Him being human—I think the most human thing He might’ve ever done was when He was on that cross. Right before He passed, He said, “Father, why have You forsaken me?”
I wrote a song about it. I hope there’s somebody here tonight who needs to hear this. It’s called “If God Lives Here.”
We want it to be right, y’all. These guitars ain’t staying in tune, so just give me a second.
He’s here right now, guys. He’s in this place with us.
Amen.
Anybody know a good joke? Lighten the mood a little bit?
I will say, this is the coldest show I’ve ever played in my life. I can’t feel my fingers right now, so y’all bear with us. I need to get this song out of me. I need you guys to hear it tonight. I think somebody else needs to hear it, too.
Here we go.
