Marked by Majesty

Dr. Stephen Phinney

When we talk about Christian identity, what exactly do we mean? Is it just about attending church or following a set of rules? Or is there something deeper, something foundational that shapes who we are as believers? I want to take you on a journey through the foundations of Christian identity—a journey that will help you understand not only who you are in Christ but also how that identity empowers you to live authentically and impact the world around you.

Marked by Majesty, Christian identity is far more than a label—it is a royal reality, declared in Scripture and walked out in the ordinary moments of every day. It means embracing who the King says we are and allowing His verdict to reshape every corner of our lives. In the pages ahead, we’ll unpack the core elements of this majestic identity, step by step.

Understanding Identity Within Royalty

At its core, Christian identity is about being in Christ. This phrase appears throughout the New Testament and carries immense significance. To be "in Christ" means that our lives are united with His—His death, resurrection, and righteousness become ours. This union is the foundation of everything else.

But what does this look like practically? Here are some key aspects:

  • New Creation: 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us, "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." This means our past mistakes, sins, and failures no longer define us. We have a fresh start.

  • Adopted as Children of God: Through faith, we become part of God’s family. Romans 8:15 says we receive the Spirit of adoption, making us heirs of God’s promises.

  • Ambassadors for Christ: 2 Corinthians 5:20 calls us ambassadors, representing Christ to the world. Our identity carries a mission.

Understanding these basics is essential, for they establish the royal footing from which we live, relate, and face every challenge. When you grasp that your identity is anchored in the reigning Christ, you begin to walk with the confidence of one who is deeply loved, deliberately chosen, and appointed to carry the dignity of His Kingdom.

The Bible is the foundation for understanding Christian identity.

The Role of Scripture in Shaping Royal Identity

If Christian identity is rooted in being "in Christ," then Scripture is the primary source that reveals who Christ is and what it means to be united with Him. Without the Bible, our understanding would be incomplete and vulnerable to distortion.

Here’s why Scripture is indispensable:

  • Reveals God’s Character: Knowing who God is helps us understand who we are. God is loving, just, merciful, and holy. As His children, we reflect these attributes.

  • Defines Our New Nature: The Bible describes the transformation that happens when we accept Christ. It teaches us about the fruit of the Spirit, the new mind, and the new heart.

  • Guides Our Conduct: Identity isn’t just about who we are internally; it also shapes how we act. Scripture provides clear instructions on living out our faith authentically.

For example, Ephesians 4:22-24 urges believers to put off the old self and put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. This transformation is ongoing and requires daily engagement with God’s Word.

I encourage you to make Scripture your daily companion. Let it renew your mind and remind you of your true identity. It’s not just a book; it’s the living Word that shapes your very being.

Engaging with Scripture daily strengthens Christian identity.

Living Out Christian Identity in Daily Life

Knowing who you are in Christ is one thing; living it out is another. How do we translate this identity into everyday actions, decisions, and relationships? This is where the rubber meets the road.

Here are some practical ways to live out your Christian Royal identity:

  1. Walk in the Spirit: Galatians 5:16 encourages us to walk by the Spirit so we do not gratify the desires of the flesh. This means daily surrender and dependence on God’s power.

  2. Embrace Your Role in the Church: Your identity includes being part of the body of Christ. Engage in fellowship, serve others, and use your gifts to build up the church.

  3. Stand Firm in Truth: The world will challenge your beliefs and values. Knowing your identity helps you stand firm without compromise.

  4. Reflect Christ’s Love: Your identity calls you to love others sacrificially, forgive freely, and show grace.

Let me be honest—this is not always easy. There are days when doubts creep in, or the world’s pressures feel overwhelming. But remember, your identity is anchored in Christ, not in your feelings or circumstances. Keep returning to that truth.

The Impact of Christian Identity on Culture and Society

Christian identity is not just personal; it has a broader purpose. When believers understand who they are in Christ, they become agents of change in their communities and culture. This is where the Church’s influence grows strong.

Think about it: if every believer lived authentically according to their identity, how different would our neighborhoods, workplaces, and schools be? Here’s what happens when Christian identity is embraced fully:

  • Cultural Influence: Believers become salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16), influencing society with godly values.

  • Biblical Justice and Compassion: Christian identity compels us to care for the marginalized, fight injustice, and promote peace.

  • Moral Clarity: In a world of shifting morals, Christians grounded in their identity provide a steady voice of truth.

This is why organizations like IOM America are so vital. They equip believers to understand their identity deeply and live it out boldly, impacting culture through media, discipleship, and outreach.

Embracing Your Royal Position in Christ

Finally, remember this: discovering and living out your Christian identity is the ongoing journey of one who has been seated with the King of kings. It is not a single moment but a daily unfolding of growth, learning, and transformation—learning to live on earth from the royal position you already hold in Him.

Here are some tips to keep moving forward:

  • Stay Rooted in Prayer: Regular communication with God keeps your identity fresh and alive.

  • Seek Community: Surround yourself with fellow believers who encourage and challenge you.

  • Keep Learning: Dive into biblical teaching, prophecy, and discipleship resources.

  • Be Patient with Yourself: Growth takes time. Celebrate progress and trust God’s timing.

Remember, your identity in Christ is your greatest treasure. It shapes your purpose, your hope, and your destiny. Embrace it fully, live it boldly, and watch how God uses you to influence the world.
